How to clean your paving properly

Regular cleaning is the single biggest factor in how long your paving stays looking good. A soft-bristle broom and warm soapy water handles most day-to-day dirt on clay brick, concrete and flagstone.

For built-up grime or algae, a garden-variety pressure washer works well — but keep the nozzle at least 30cm from the surface and use a wide fan spray, not a narrow jet, which can strip jointing sand and damage paver edges over time.

Avoid harsh acid-based cleaners on clay brick and natural stone, as they can etch the surface. A mild, pH-neutral paving cleaner is safer for long-term colour and texture.

After any deep clean, top up jointing sand where it's washed away — this keeps pavers locked together and prevents weeds from establishing in the gaps.
